Privacy Policy

Finite Bean CIC ("we", "us", "our") runs The Bean. This policy explains what personal data The Bean collects, why, and how it's kept. The Bean is free to use and has its own account system, separate from the Finite Bean Math Tutor app — you can have a The Bean account without a Math Tutor account, and the two aren't linked.

We are based in the United Kingdom. This policy is written to reflect UK GDPR and EU GDPR principles.

What we collect

To create and run your account, we store:

• Your email address and password (the password itself is never stored in readable form — our authentication provider, Supabase, handles that securely).
• Your profile — the handle, display name, and short bio you choose to set.
• Friend connections — who you've sent or received friend requests with, and who you're friends with.
• Messages and posts you send within The Bean, including in live rooms, so they can be delivered and shown to the people you're sharing them with.
• Math memory notes you choose to type in — these stay on your own device, not on our servers.

Why we collect it

Solely to run The Bean: signing you in, showing your profile to people you connect with, delivering messages, and keeping your account synced across devices. We don't sell your data, and we don't use it for advertising.

Who can see what

Your handle, display name, and bio are visible to other signed-in The Bean users so they can find and add you as a friend. Messages and posts are visible to whoever you send or share them with (friends, or people in the same live room). Your email address is never shown to other users.

Where your data lives

The Bean's data is stored with Supabase, our database provider, in a project kept entirely separate from the Math Tutor app's data. Access is protected by row-level security rules, meaning the database itself only allows you to read and write data tied to your own account (or things shared with you, like friend requests and messages).

Children's privacy

Finite Bean is educational software, and we've built our signup process around keeping anyone under 16 from having to hand over their own personal data to use The Bean.

• If you're under 16, you can't create your own account. Instead, a parent or guardian creates it on your behalf: the email address and password on the account belong to them, not to you, and any account emails (password resets, and so on) go to their inbox, not yours.
• At the point that account is created, the parent or guardian is asked to confirm they're the child's parent or guardian, that they're 18 or older, and that they consent to the child's use of the Service. We keep a record of that confirmation on the device (and later in our systems where available) so there's a clear record of consent if it's ever needed.
• A teacher or school official may instead set up the account, confirming they're authorised by their school to do so and that their school has met any parental consent requirements required by law, in the same way as if a student were given a login for any other classroom software. We keep the same kind of record of that confirmation.

We do not collect personal data directly from an unaccompanied child using the Service. If you're a parent or guardian and believe a child has given us personal data outside of this process, please contact us and we will delete it.

Cookies

We use a small number of strictly necessary cookies (and similar local storage) to keep you signed in and to remember your session on The Bean. We do not use advertising or tracking cookies. See our Cookie Notice for more detail.

Your rights

You can update your profile, remove friends, or sign out at any time from within the app. To delete your account entirely or ask what data we hold on you, contact us below. UK/EU residents also have the right to complain to your local data protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office).

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as The Bean changes. We'll update the "last updated" date above whenever we make a change.
